Subject: Re: ODG: Advert for Chair in Private Law, King's College London -- and further private law opportunuities elsewhere

With apologies for overloading, can I piggy-back on this and write to publicise our own more modest advertisement for lecturers / SLs in private - commercial - shipping at Swansea law school?

With a large, keen and diverse grouping of private lawyers, we are in the forefront of research and teaching in the field of commercial and maritime law, running among other things one of the largest and most successful commercial and maritime LLM programmes in the UK. In addition we host the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL), which promotes research and teaching of the highest standard in the fields of international shipping and trade law and fosters co-operation with the City and professional, commercial, shipping, insurance and business organisations in the UK and elsewhere. The IISTL, which boasts its own excellent commercial law library, enjoys an enviable reputation, and any appointee could expect to be closely involved with its work.

Unofficially, Swansea has two other advantages: freedom from control from London (education is devolved in Wales) and housing that even a lecturer can afford.

The ad is currently at http://www.swansea.ac.uk/the-university/work-at-swansea/jobs/details.php?nPostingID=1771&nPostingTargetID=3285&option=52&sort=DESC&respnr=1&ID=QHUFK026203F3VBQB7VLO8NXD&JOBADLG=UK&Resultsperpage=20&lg=UK&mask=suext. It officially becomes public on 3 November.

Informal enquiries are welcome. Feel free to contact Prof Baris Soyer, Head of Postgraduate Legal Studies Department, at B.Soyer@swansea.ac.uk (01792-295125) or Prof Andrew Tettenborn, Professor of Commercial Law, at A.M.Tettenborn@Swansea.ac.uk (01792-602724).

Dear Colleagues,

With apologies for cross-posting, I write to publicise the advertisement for a Chair in Private Law at the Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London. The School welcomes applications from candidates with research and teaching interests in the law of contract, tort, trusts or property.

The School is in the third year of a substantial investment programme, funded chiefly by a gift of £20 million from Dr Dickson Poon CBE, the Hong Kong-based philanthropist, and by a gift of £7 million from the Yeoh Tiong Lay family. The Dickson Poon School of Law is now seeking to appoint an outstanding candidate to the position of Chair in Private Law. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake world-leading research and to contribute strongly to teaching at the School, particularly in Private Law. The position will suit an individual with an outstanding track record of research and a deep personal commitment to the delivery of teaching of the highest quality. The Chair in Private Law will be expected to exercise world-class academic leadership in research and teaching in Private Law at the School. The successful candidate will be expected to make a leading contribution to the School’s research profile, by sustaining high-quality research through a portfolio of individual and joint research projects, and by active participation in research communities. He or she will also be expected to contribute strongly to the development and delivery of teaching on the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, in particular in relation to the School’s undergraduate Private Law curriculum.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Wednesday 26 November 2014, with interviews will be held in December.

If anyone has initial, informal queries about the post, you are welcome to contact either my colleague Dr Irit Samet (irit.samet@kcl.ac.uk) or me (james.lee@kcl.ac.uk).

Best wishes,

James
